On 8 May, Ambassador Olexander Scherba, together with the heads of a number of embassies in South Africa at his invitation, honoured the memory of those who perished in the Second World War. They laid wreaths at the Wall of Names at the historic Freedom Park in the South African capital. Addressing those present, the Ambassador of Ukraine thanked them for taking part in the commemorative event and stated that the freedom and democracy of today were made possible thanks to those who made sacrifices for them in the past – including eighty years ago in the fight against Nazism and three decades ago in the struggle against apartheid. He stressed that this struggle continues today in Ukraine, where people are fighting for their freedom against Russian imperialism.
