Unveiling of the Information Sign in Mazeppa Bay
01 September 2025 12:30

On 1 September, in the coastal village of Mazeppa Bay in the Eastern Cape, a new information sign was unveiled. The ceremony connected the stories of South Africa and Ukraine, while first and foremost honouring the heritage of the Wild Coast and its people.
The sign features the schooner Mazeppa (1842) together with a portrait of Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa (1639–1709), a historical leader associated with freedom, education, and independence. On its right side, the word “Freedom” is inscribed in all 11 official South African languages and in Ukrainian — symbolising a value deeply shared by both nations.

Although Ivan Mazepa never set foot in South Africa, his story reached the Wild Coast through maritime history and literature. The schooner Mazeppa, after which the bay is named, carried his name into the southern seas, while  Romantic poets  immortalised Mazepa as a symbol of resilience and the struggle for liberty. Today, Mazeppa Bay stands as a unique place where these global narratives meet local heritage.
Before the unveiling, local community leaders and elders recalled the history of the Wild Coast — from the centuries of Xhosa stewardship and resilience during the frontier wars to the apartheid-era Transkei homeland system. These stories remind us that the coastline carries the memory of ancestors and their struggle for dignity and identity.

Ambassador of Ukraine to South Africa, Liubov Abravitova, said:
“South Africa and Ukraine share a history of resistance to domination. By placing these histories side by side, we honour the dignity of the Eastern Cape people while also celebrating Ukraine’s contribution to the ideals of freedom.”
The initiative was realised through a partnership between the Embassy of Ukraine in South Africa, the @ukrainians_of_south_africa, and The View Mazeppa Bay Hotel, in close cooperation with the local community to ensure that tourism growth supports households, skills development, and cultural preservation.
