On the occasion of the 35th Anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine, the Alliance Française du Cap, in partnership with the Ukrainian Association of South Africa (UAZA) and the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of South Africa, will host a special evening in Cape Town dedicated to Ukrainian culture, memory and solidarity.
Date: 24 August 2026
Time: 18:00
Venue: Alliance Française du Cap, Cape Town
The programme will open with a contemporary dance performance by the lead dancers of the award-winning production The Forest, inspired by Lesya Ukrainka’s celebrated Forest Song. The performance brings together Ukrainian cultural heritage and contemporary South African artistic expression.
The performance will be followed by a screening of Kherson: Human Safari, a 72-minute documentary directed and produced by war correspondent Zarina Zabrisky. Filmed in the frontline city of Kherson, the documentary combines personal testimonies and original footage documenting the Russian invasion and occupation of the city, its liberation, and the continuing violence faced by its residents.
Representatives of the Ukrainian community, the Consular Corps, civil society and friends of Ukraine are invited to attend the event.
The evening will provide an opportunity to celebrate Ukrainian culture, honour the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people, and express solidarity with Ukraine in its defence of freedom, sovereignty and democracy.
